Materials — Structural Framing
Structural Framing for Large Deck Construction
The framing system beneath a deck is as important as the decking surface above it. For large, elevated, and complex deck projects, proper structural framing is not optional — it is the foundation of a safe, durable, long-lasting structure.
Why Framing Matters
Most homeowners focus on the decking surface — the material they walk on and see every day. But the structural framing beneath that surface determines whether the deck is safe, whether it will last, and whether it will perform as expected over decades of use.
For large, elevated, and complex deck projects, framing decisions have significant structural implications. The wrong framing system, improperly specified materials, or inadequate hardware can lead to structural failure, premature deterioration, and safety hazards.
Deckmasters has experience with the full range of structural framing options for premium deck construction, including properly specified pressure-treated lumber, structural composite framing, and engineered framing systems. We select framing materials based on the specific requirements of each project — not based on what is cheapest or most convenient.
Structural Framing Options
Properly specified pressure-treated lumber remains the most common structural framing material for residential deck construction. The key word is 'properly specified' — the correct treatment level, species, and grade for the specific application and exposure conditions.
Structural composite lumber products, including laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and parallel strand lumber (PSL), offer superior dimensional stability and strength compared to sawn lumber. These products are particularly valuable for long spans and applications where dimensional consistency is critical.
Deckmasters has experience with Owens Corning structural composite lumber products, which offer excellent performance characteristics for demanding framing applications.
Framing hardware — joist hangers, post bases, beam connectors, and fasteners — must be appropriate for the treatment level of the lumber and the exposure conditions of the project. Incorrect hardware selection leads to premature corrosion and structural failure.
For projects in demanding environments or where premium hardware is specified, stainless-steel framing hardware provides superior corrosion resistance and long-term performance.
For complex structural conditions — long spans, elevated structures, unusual loads — engineered framing systems designed by a licensed structural engineer provide the documentation and performance assurance that demanding projects require.
When Engineering Is Required
Not every deck project requires a structural engineer. But large, elevated, and complex projects often do — and in many municipalities, engineering is required by code for decks above a certain height or size. Deckmasters coordinates with structural engineers when projects require it, and we work from engineer-stamped drawings to ensure the framing system meets the project's structural requirements.
