Materials — Ipe Hardwood

Ipe Hardwood Decking

Ipe is one of the densest, most durable natural hardwoods available for outdoor construction. When properly installed, it delivers exceptional longevity, a premium architectural appearance, and a performance profile that few materials can match.

What Is Ipe?

Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is a tropical hardwood native to South America. It is one of the hardest and densest woods commercially available, with a Janka hardness rating that exceeds most domestic hardwoods by a significant margin. This density is what gives Ipe its exceptional durability and resistance to wear, insects, and decay.

Ipe has been used in demanding outdoor applications for decades — boardwalks, commercial decking, marine environments, and luxury residential decks. When properly installed and maintained, Ipe decks can last 40 to 75 years or more. This longevity is one of the primary reasons sophisticated homeowners and commercial property owners choose Ipe despite its higher initial cost.

The appearance of Ipe is distinctive — a rich, warm brown that weathers to a silver-gray if left untreated, or can be maintained in its original color with periodic oiling. The grain is tight and consistent, giving Ipe a refined, architectural appearance that complements high-end residential and commercial environments.

Proper Ipe Installation

Ipe is one of the most demanding decking materials to install correctly. Its density makes it difficult to work with standard tools, and improper installation leads to premature movement, splitting, and appearance problems. Deckmasters has extensive experience with Ipe installation and understands the specific requirements that proper installation demands.

Stainless-Steel Fasteners

Ipe requires stainless-steel fasteners. Standard galvanized or zinc-plated fasteners will corrode in contact with Ipe's natural oils, leading to staining and structural failure.

Pre-Drilling

Ipe must be pre-drilled before fastening. Attempting to drive fasteners without pre-drilling will split the wood and damage the material.

Proper Ventilation

Ipe decking requires proper ventilation beneath the boards to allow moisture to escape and prevent the conditions that lead to premature deterioration.

Acclimation

Ipe should be allowed to acclimate to site conditions before installation to minimize post-installation movement.

Hidden Fastening Options

Hidden fastening systems are available for Ipe and provide a cleaner finished appearance without visible fastener heads.

End Sealing

End grain sealing helps prevent checking and cracking at board ends, particularly important in climates with significant temperature variation.

Ipe Maintenance

Ipe requires less maintenance than most natural wood decking materials, but it is not maintenance-free. The primary maintenance decision is whether to maintain the wood's original color or allow it to weather naturally.

If left untreated, Ipe weathers to a consistent silver-gray. This is a natural process and does not affect the structural integrity of the wood. Many homeowners and commercial property owners prefer the weathered appearance.

If you prefer to maintain the original warm brown color, periodic application of a penetrating oil finish is required. The frequency depends on sun exposure, climate conditions, and the specific product used. Deckmasters can provide guidance on appropriate maintenance products and schedules for your specific installation.
